Sutton Manor Woodland and the Dream Sculpture

Merseyside

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10No livestock means a dog has big grassy paths to run on at this reclaimed St Helens colliery site, leading to the 20 metre Dream sculpture.

Sutton Manor Woodland occupies the site of the former Sutton Manor Colliery, which closed in the 1980s, and was transformed into a 230 acre community woodland and wildlife site in the years that followed, now managed by Forestry England. There's no livestock here, so a dog has big, wide grassy paths to run on all the way to the site's landmark sculpture. At its highest point stands Dream, a 20 metre high sculpture of a girl's head carved from Spanish dolomite by the artist Jaume Plensa in 2009, visible for miles across the flat St Helens countryside and from the M62 motorway nearby. This roughly 3.2km loop from the King George V car park on Jubits Lane follows wide grassy and gravel paths through young woodland to the sculpture and back, on gently rolling ground that reflects the site's mining history.

This is a dog friendly woodland with a huge amount of open space, and for most of the walk a dog with reasonable recall can be safely off lead away from the main paths near the car park. There is no livestock anywhere on site. The paths are wide and grassy rather than rooty or overgrown, which suits dogs of any age, though there is little shade once you are clear of the younger trees near Dream itself. There are no cafes or toilets on site, so this is one for a there and back visit rather than a long stay. Parking at the King George V car park off Jubits Lane is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Sutton Manor Woodland and the Dream Sculpture dog friendly?

Sutton Manor Woodland is a great spot for dogs, earning a solid 8/10 on our dog friendly rating. The site covers 230 acres of reclaimed woodland with wide grassy and gravel paths, no livestock anywhere on site, and plenty of open space to roam — it's genuinely one of the more relaxed woodland walks you'll find in Merseyside.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Sutton Manor Woodland and the Dream Sculpture?

For most of the walk, dogs with reasonable recall can enjoy being off lead safely — there's no livestock on site, and the wide grassy paths give them plenty of room to stretch their legs. It's worth keeping dogs on lead closer to the car park near the main paths, but once you're out into the woodland proper, it's a much more relaxed picture.

  • What should I know before visiting Sutton Manor Woodland and the Dream Sculpture with my dog?

There are no facilities on site — no café and no toilets — so it's best treated as a there-and-back visit rather than a long day out; bring water for you and your dog. The roughly 3.2km loop from the King George V car park on Jubits Lane is on gently rolling ground with wide, well-maintained paths that suit dogs of any age, though shade is limited once you move beyond the younger trees near the Dream sculpture. Parking is free.
