Eastham Country Park

Merseyside

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A dedicated dog play area and no livestock make Eastham's ancient woodland an easy off lead ramble, with Mersey estuary views across to Liverpool.

Eastham Country Park covers 100 acres of ancient semi natural woodland on the Wirral bank of the Mersey estuary, on the site of what was once a Victorian pleasure garden and, before that, farmland attached to Eastham Hall. There's no livestock and a dedicated dog play area at the visitor centre, so this is an easy woodland ramble for a dog off the lead. The paths wind through mature broadleaf woodland past the remains of old stone walls, raised platforms and a former bear pit, relics of the park's more elaborate past, before opening onto the river frontage with views across the Mersey to Liverpool and the docks. This roughly 4km circuit takes in the woodland trails, the sculpture trail and the riverside path, on a mix of surfaced and natural paths with some gentle undulation but no serious climbing.

This is a dog friendly park with a dedicated dog play area near the visitor centre, a good option for burning off energy before or after the woodland walk. The trails give a dog with reasonable recall moderate freedom off the lead, and there is no livestock to worry about anywhere in the park. The river frontage looks out over strong tidal currents in the Mersey, so keep dogs back from the water's edge rather than letting them swim. The visitor centre has a tea garden, toilets and picnic areas, and parking is paid. Eastham village is a short walk away for a dog friendly pub afterwards.

  • Is Eastham Country Park dog friendly?

Eastham Country Park is a great choice for dog owners, earning a solid 8/10 on our dog friendly rating. The park has no livestock anywhere on site, a dedicated dog play area near the visitor centre, and 100 acres of ancient woodland to explore. There's also a tea garden and picnic areas if you fancy a break, and Eastham village is a short walk away for a dog friendly pub afterwards.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Eastham Country Park?

Dogs with reasonable recall can enjoy good freedom off the lead throughout the woodland trails, and there's no livestock anywhere in the park to worry about. There's also a dedicated dog play area near the visitor centre, which is a handy spot for a proper run-around before or after the walk. The one thing to watch is the river frontage — the Mersey has strong tidal currents, so keep dogs back from the water's edge rather than letting them swim.

  • What should I know before visiting Eastham Country Park with my dog?

The roughly 4km circuit takes in woodland trails, a sculpture trail and a riverside path, with a mix of surfaced and natural paths and some gentle undulation but nothing too strenuous. Parking is paid at the visitor centre on Ferry Road (CH62 0BH), and facilities on site include a tea garden, toilets and picnic areas. As mentioned, the Mersey's tidal currents are strong, so the river frontage is one to enjoy for the views across to Liverpool rather than a swimming stop for your dog.
