Wirral Country Park, Thurstaston
Merseyside
Wirral Country Park runs for 12 miles along the old Hooton to West Kirby railway line, known as the Wirral Way, and this walk uses the section around Thurstaston, where the line meets the Dee estuary. Livestock is light on this stretch, so a dog can range freely on the old railway trackbed and heathland above the estuary. From the visitor centre the route climbs Thurstaston Hill, a low sandstone outcrop of heath and gorse with views across the estuary to the hills of North Wales, then drops to follow the Wirral Way through a woodland corridor before returning along the shore path below the low sandstone cliffs. The going is easy on the old railway trackbed and firm shore paths, with a short, steeper section on the hill and one stretch of narrow footpath alongside the A540.
This is a dog friendly stretch of coast and country park, with long grassy paths on the old railway line and stretches of beach at Thurstaston where a dog with good recall can run freely at low tide. Livestock is not generally an issue on this route, though the reserve asks dogs to be kept under control around ground nesting birds on the heath in spring. The Dee estuary is tidal and can be muddy underfoot close to the water, so keep dogs away from soft mud and check the tide before heading onto the shore. There is a cafe at the visitor centre, and pubs in Thurstaston village are a short walk away. Parking is available at the visitor centre.

Dogs with good recall can enjoy plenty of off-lead freedom here — the old railway trackbed, heathland and beach at low tide all offer room to roam. There is also a short stretch of narrow footpath alongside the A540 where you'll want your dog close.
