Bidston Hill
Merseyside
Bidston Hill rises to 70 metres above the Wirral, one of the highest points on the peninsula, and its exposed sandstone has been quarried, carved and built on for centuries. No livestock grazes the heath, so a dog can range across the sandy tracks and rock outcrops fairly freely. This 3.5km circular walk crosses heath, gorse and pockets of woodland past Bidston Windmill, a restored eighteenth century tower mill, and the Bidston Observatory, a Victorian building once used for tide prediction and time signals for Liverpool's docks. Faint carvings on the exposed rock, thought to include a horse and a sun figure of uncertain age, can be found close to the paths. The terrain is easy underfoot on sandy tracks and rock outcrops, with a couple of short, steeper sections where the sandstone breaks the surface.
This is a dog friendly hilltop with moderate off lead potential on the open heath for a dog with good recall, though a few rocky drops and the roads that cross the site mean it pays to keep a dog closer in places. There is no livestock to worry about here. The heather and gorse give plenty of scent for a dog to work, and the woodland pockets offer shade in summer. There is a free car park at Tam O'Shanter Farm on Boundary Road, though it closes at 5pm daily, so plan your visit accordingly, and there is further on street parking on Vyner Road North if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bidston Hill dog friendly?
Bidston Hill is a solid choice for a dog walk, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. There's no livestock on the heath, so dogs can move around freely across the sandy tracks, rock outcrops and woodland pockets without the usual worry of disturbing grazing animals. The 3.5km circular route past Bidston Windmill and the Victorian observatory gives plenty of interest for owners too.
Can dogs be off lead at Bidston Hill?
There's good off lead potential on the open heath for dogs with reliable recall, and the absence of livestock makes this easier than many similar spots. That said, there are a few rocky drops and roads that cross the site, so it's worth keeping your dog a little closer in those areas. The heather and gorse give dogs plenty of scent to work, which makes the heath particularly enjoyable for them.
What should I know before visiting Bidston Hill with my dog?
The most important practical thing to be aware of is the car park at Tam O'Shanter Farm on Boundary Road, which is free but closes at 5pm daily — so plan your visit with that in mind. If you miss it or arrive late, there's on-street parking available on Vyner Road North. There are no toilets or cafe on site, so come prepared, with the nearest facilities found in Bidston village.
