Sefton Park, Liverpool

Merseyside

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10No livestock means a dog can run the open meadows of Liverpool's grand Victorian Sefton Park, around a boating lake and the restored Palm House.

Sefton Park is a 235 acre Victorian park in the Aigburth area of south Liverpool, laid out in the 1870s by the French landscape designer Edouard Andre and now a Grade I listed park and one of the city's best known green spaces. With no livestock anywhere, a dog can run across the open meadows around the boating lake and Palm House. At its heart the boating lake is fed by the Fairy Glen stream, and nearby the Grade II* listed Palm House, a Victorian glasshouse restored after years of dereliction, holds palms, tree ferns and a cafe. This roughly 3.7km circuit follows the park's perimeter path and cuts across the open meadows, taking in the lake, the Palm House and the obelisk near the northern entrance, on flat, well surfaced paths throughout.

This is a dog friendly park used by Liverpool residents every day, with dogs asked to stay on a lead near the playground and the boating lake but free to run in the open meadows for a dog with reasonable recall. There is no livestock to worry about anywhere in the park. The lake attracts swans, ducks and geese, so keep dogs on a lead or under close control close to the water to avoid disturbing them. The Palm House cafe has outdoor seating where dogs are often welcome, and there are on street parking options around the park's edge as well as pay and display bays on Aigburth Drive.
