Tinto Hill from Fallburn

South Lanarkshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A steep out-and-back climb up Tinto from Fallburn, testing for fit dogs, with a huge Bronze Age cairn and views to Arran at the top.

Tinto is a distinctive, isolated hill rising to 711 metres above the Clyde valley near Symington in South Lanarkshire, its name likely from the Gaelic for hill of fire, after the pink felsite on its upper slopes. It's a demanding climb for a dog, with sheep grazing the open hill and no water or shade on the way up. This out-and-back walk climbs 3.2km from the Fallburn car park up the flank of Totherin Hill, with 490 metres of ascent to the summit. The path is maintained throughout, steepening on the upper half, with no scrambling involved. At the top stands a huge Bronze Age cairn, reputedly the largest in Scotland, possibly used to mark the winter solstice, alongside a trig point. On a clear day the summit gives views over the Clyde and Avon valleys to Arran and the Southern Uplands.

This is a dog friendly hill walk with moderate off-lead potential on the open grassy slopes, though sheep graze the hill throughout, so keep dogs on a lead or under close control whenever livestock are about. There is no water source and little shade on the climb, so bring enough for a thirsty dog on a warm day. The ascent is a genuine climb rather than a gentle stroll, and paws will feel the sustained gradient on the way down as much as on the way up. Fallburn car park has no facilities, but the Tinto Hill Tearoom in nearby Thankerton is dog friendly and gives treats to dogs, making a good stop before or after the climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Tinto Hill from Fallburn dog friendly?

Tinto Hill from Fallburn is a solid option for dogs who are fit and up for a challenge, earning a 7/10 dog friendly rating. The path is well-maintained throughout with no scrambling, and the open grassy slopes offer good space to roam. After the walk, the Tinto Hill Tearoom in nearby Thankerton is dog friendly and even gives treats to dogs, making it a great place to round off the day.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Tinto Hill from Fallburn?

There's moderate off-lead potential on the open grassy slopes, but sheep graze the hill throughout, so your dog will need to be on a lead or under close control whenever livestock are nearby. It's worth keeping a close eye on conditions as you climb, as the grazing is spread across the whole hill rather than confined to one area.

  • What should I know before visiting Tinto Hill from Fallburn with my dog?

This is a demanding climb — 3.2km with 490 metres of ascent — so it's best suited to fit, healthy dogs rather than puppies or older dogs with joint issues. There is no water source and very little shade on the route, so bring plenty of water for your dog, especially in warmer weather. Paws can take a hammering on the sustained descent as much as the climb up, so it's worth checking your dog's pads before and after.
