Trotternish Ridge: Flodigarry to the Quiraing

The Trotternish ridge is the longest continuous ridge walk on Skye, running 35 km from Portree to Flodigarry along the eastern escarpment of the Trotternish lava plateau. The northern section from Flodigarry to the Quiraing car park takes in the finest and most dramatic section of the ridge, following the cliff edge above Staffin Bay through the extraordinary geological formations of the Quiraing landslip. The terrain alternates between broad moorland ridge, grassy plateaus and sections requiring careful navigation around unstable ground at the landslip itself. The views east to the Scottish mainland and the islands of the Outer Hebrides are exceptional throughout.
This is an outstanding dog friendly ridge walk for fit, experienced dogs. Off-lead potential is high on the broad upper ridge sections, with minimal livestock and open moorland providing freedom to run in all directions. The landslip sections near the Quiraing require more care, with unstable ground and narrow paths in places. The point-to-point nature requires either two vehicles or a return leg via a different path. An early start avoids the worst of the Quiraing tourist traffic at the southern end. The ridge carries significant exposure and the weather can change rapidly; full waterproofs and navigation equipment should be carried. A walk that earns its place among the finest ridge routes in Scotland.
