The Quiraing, Isle of Skye

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10One of the most extraordinary landscapes in Scotland, an active landslip of towering pinnacles and hidden plateaus on the Trotternish ridge, with far-reaching views across to the mainland.

The Quiraing is an ongoing landslip on the eastern face of the Trotternish ridge, and the landscape it has created is like nowhere else in Scotland. A confusion of rock pinnacles, grassy ledges, hidden plateaus and near-vertical cliffs drops eastward towards Staffin Bay while the ridge above provides a walker's highway with views stretching to Torridon, the mainland peaks and on clear days as far as the Outer Hebrides. The circular route from the car park takes in the Table, a flat grassy platform hidden among the pinnacles, and follows the ridge crest before returning via the lower path below the rock faces. The ground is often boggy and the path surface varies considerably.

This is a spectacular dog friendly walk that demands careful management on the cliff-edge sections where the ground drops sharply and the paths are narrow. Off-lead time is best taken on the upper ridge plateau between the steeper sections. Some sections carry livestock, so a lead is advisable on approach paths through grazing land. The scenery justifies a degree of extra effort from the owner, and dogs with good stamina and sure footing will find the terrain engaging and varied. The car park fills rapidly in summer; the Staffin to Uig road gives access but is single-track for much of its length.
