Portree Loch Circular, Isle of Skye

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A pleasant harbour-and-woodland circuit from Skye's main town combining moderate off-lead paths through Scorrybreac woodland with colourful Portree Harbour and good post-walk dog-friendly facilities.

Portree is the main town and service hub of Skye, its colourful waterfront of painted houses reflected in the harbour making it one of the most photographed small towns in Scotland. The loch circular from the pier follows the eastern shore of the harbour through Scorrybreac woodland before continuing around the loch head and returning via the western shore and viewpoints above the town. The walk is largely flat and well-surfaced, offering views across the harbour mouth to Ben Tianavaig and along the Trotternish coast. It provides an excellent option on arrival or departure from the island when time or energy does not allow longer ventures.

This is a good dog friendly walk for a day based in Portree or as a gentle introduction to the island. Off-lead potential is moderate, with the woodland sections offering some freedom and the harbour-side path requiring leads near the road. The harbour itself is enjoyable for most dogs given the range of marine scents from the fishing boats and the general activity of a working harbour. Livestock risk is low throughout the town and loch circuit. Portree has a generous selection of dog-friendly cafés and pubs, making the loch walk a practical combination with eating and shopping. The town makes an excellent base for exploring the rest of Skye.
