Talisker Bay, Isle of Skye

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An easy track past a historic house leads dogs to Talisker's black and white sand for a splash, with a sea stack and waterfall for their humans.

Talisker Bay lies at the end of a minor road on the west coast of the Minginish peninsula, a few miles beyond Carbost and its distillery, and walkhighlands calls it the finest sandy bay on Skye. Sheep graze the area, so keep a dog on the lead along the track, though it can run free on the sand once clear of livestock. The walk follows a signed track from the road end past Talisker House, a white house dating from the 1720s that was for centuries home to the next in line to the MacLeod chief, and where Dr Johnson and James Boswell stayed on their tour of the Hebrides. Beyond a second gate the track rises slightly and drops to the southern end of the bay, a beach of stones and black and white sand patterned by the burns flowing across it. A sea stack stands at the southern end, and at the northern end a waterfall plunges down vertical cliffs. It is 3.5km there and back with 54 metres of climbing, on an easy track.

This is a dog friendly walk with a big payoff for very little effort, and dogs love the open sand and the burns running across it. Sheep graze the area, so keep your dog on a lead on the track and whenever you see them, then enjoy some freedom on the beach when it is clear. Visit at lower tide, as very high tides cover the sand. Parking is a small layby that fills in summer, and there are no facilities.

It's a big payoff for very little effort.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Talisker Bay, Isle of Skye?

Dogs need to be kept on the lead along the track from the road end to the beach, as sheep graze the area.
