Coral Beaches from Claigan, Isle of Skye

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10White maerl sand and shallow water for a paddle await dogs on the lead at Skye's Coral Beaches, with views to Lampay and Isay for their humans.

The Coral Beaches at Claigan, north of Dunvegan Castle on the north-west of Skye, are among the most beautiful coastal spots on the island. The path crosses crofting land grazed by sheep and cattle, so every dog stays on the lead the whole way to a sandy beach for a paddle. The sand is not coral at all but maerl, the bleached skeletons of a red coralline seaweed that grows only about a millimetre a year, mixed with thousands of tiny snail shells, which gives the beach its brilliant white colour. From the car park at the road end, a track runs along the shore of Loch Dunvegan, where seals often surface to watch walkers, to the pebbly bay of Camas Ban. A path then crosses grassy pasture and a stream on stepping stones and passes through a gap in a drystone wall to reveal the main beach, with the islands of Lampay and Isay offshore. The small flat-topped hill of Cnoc Mor a Ghrobain behind the sands gives a fine view from Waternish round to Dunvegan Head. The walk is 4km there and back with 90 metres of climbing.

This dog friendly walk crosses working crofting land where sheep and cattle graze, and sometimes a bull, and the local guidance is that all dogs must be on leads. That makes it a lead walk for most of the way, but dogs still love the soft sand, the shallow water at the beach. There are no toilets or cafe at Claigan, and the car park is busy on sunny days.

  • Is Coral Beaches from Claigan, Isle of Skye dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcome at the Coral Beaches, earning a 7/10 dog friendly rating. The walk is around 4km there and back, and dogs get to enjoy the famous white maerl sand and a splash in the shallow water at the beach — well worth the trip for water-loving dogs.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Coral Beaches from Claigan, Isle of Skye?

Unfortunately not — the path crosses working crofting land grazed by sheep, cattle, and sometimes a bull, so dogs must be kept on the lead for the entire walk. That said, the beach itself still makes for a lovely reward, with soft sand and calm, shallow water for a paddle.

  • What should I know before visiting Coral Beaches from Claigan, Isle of Skye with my dog?

Come prepared for a lead-only walk from start to finish, given the grazing livestock on the crofting land.
