Wepre Park and Ewloe Castle

Flintshire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A 160 acre wooded valley park in Connah's Quay where dogs can roam off lead beside a brook and waterfall to the ruined keep of Ewloe Castle.

Wepre Park is a 160 acre country park run by Flintshire County Council, following the wooded valley of the Wepre Brook from the edge of Connah's Quay up towards Ewloe. There is no livestock here, so a dog with good recall can go off lead through most of the woodland. The brook drops over a small waterfall that once drove a hydroelectric plant, and the paths pass a red sandstone outcrop and fishing ponds before reaching Ewloe Castle, a native Welsh fortification with a distinctive D-shaped keep built in the 13th century. A circular route linking the visitor centre, the waterfall and the castle covers around 4.8km, an easy walk on well maintained paths near the entrance that become muddier and more uneven further into the woods. There is little climbing overall, though the valley sides give some short, gentle slopes.

This is a dog friendly park popular with local dog walkers, and with no livestock on site a dog with reasonable recall can have moderate freedom off lead away from the busier paths near the visitor centre. The Wepre Brook and its ponds give plenty of chances to paddle or drink, and the woodland canopy keeps much of the route shaded in summer. Paths closer to the entrance are surfaced and suit buggies and less confident walkers, while the trails up towards Ewloe Castle are narrower and can be slippery after rain. The park has a visitor centre, toilets and free parking, plus a play area and playing fields near the entrance for a shorter outing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Wepre Park and Ewloe Castle dog friendly?

Wepre Park is a well-established favourite with local dog walkers and earns a solid 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The 160-acre wooded park has no livestock on site, plenty of space to roam, and a brook with ponds that dogs tend to make a beeline for. It's a genuinely relaxed place to bring a dog.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Wepre Park and Ewloe Castle?

Yes — with no livestock in the park, dogs with reasonable recall can enjoy moderate freedom off lead through most of the woodland. It's worth keeping them closer to heel on the busier paths near the visitor centre, but once you're heading up through the valley towards Ewloe Castle there's plenty of room to let them stretch their legs.

  • What should I know before visiting Wepre Park and Ewloe Castle with my dog?

The paths near the entrance are well surfaced and easy going, but the trails up towards Ewloe Castle become narrower, muddier and more uneven — particularly after rain — so boots are a good idea. The Wepre Brook and its ponds offer natural drinking and paddling spots along the route, which is handy on warmer days when the woodland canopy keeps things shaded. There's free parking and toilets at the visitor centre, but no café on site, so bring your own supplies.
