Gainsthorpe is one of the best preserved deserted medieval villages in England, surviving entirely as grassy humps and hollows: house platforms, barns, boundary banks and the lines of the streets between them. Once your eye adjusts, the plan of a whole community appears out of an empty Lincolnshire field. Legend says it was a den of thieves pulled down by fed up locals.
As you trace the streets and house platforms, your dog gets open, quiet grassland with almost no visitors and level going throughout. Best seen in low winter sun or long evening light, when the earthworks throw shadows and the plan becomes obvious.
Free and open at any reasonable time, off Gainsthorpe Road near Kirton in Lindsey. No dog rules are published for the site. It is surrounded by working farmland, so keep your dog on a lead, close gates and be alert for livestock. There are no facilities and the access track can be muddy.
