Stonefield Castle Hotel

Stonefield, Argyll and Bute

Yes. Dogs can stay overnight.

A Scottish baronial castle hotel on the shores of Loch Fyne, with 60 acres of grounds, towels for muddy paws at the door and sausages for the dog.

Stonefield Castle was built in 1837 on the shores of Loch Fyne, two miles above the fishing village of Tarbert, and it is a fine example of Scottish baronial architecture. The grounds run to 60 acres of woodland gardens, which is the first thing to say for a dog friendly hotel: there is Barmore Island, accessible via a non-tidal causeway, and the loch itself for a swim.

Fluffy towels wait at the castle entrance for muddy paws, and there is a dog first aid kit with tick removers; ask in advance about storing raw dog food and the hotel will be happy to help. Dogs per room the hotel doesn't state, so confirm it when you book. When you walk round the hotel, dogs are kept on a lead and asked not to disturb other guests, and the hotel notes that you may be liable for any damage.

Dogs are not allowed in Barmore Bistro, but they are welcome in 1837 Bar, and the places they can eat run to the bar, the lounge, the drawing room and the terrace, where they join you at the table. Breakfast can be served in the bar too, and there are sausages for the pups. Afternoon tea comes to the drawing room with sandwiches, scones, cakes and sausage rolls.

There are 38 en suite bedrooms, individually decorated, many looking over the gardens and Loch Fyne, with Egyptian cotton bedding; the castle itself keeps its original wood panelling, ornate ceilings and marble fireplaces. The loch offers fly fishing, and the gardens hold rhododendrons raised from Himalayan seed, some parent plants over 100 years old. Westport Beach, 1.7 miles off, is the closest dog friendly beach we have mapped.
