1 / 8The Smiddy Haugh Inn
Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross
Yes. Dogs can stay in most rooms.
A 300 year old country inn at Aberuthven near Auchterarder, where three rooms take dogs and the bar keeps spare towels for muddy ones.
The Smiddy Haugh Inn is a traditional country pub in the village of Aberuthven, Auchterarder, in a building over 300 years old that began as the blacksmith's and came through the Jacobite fire of 1716. The dog friendly inn routine here runs to cuddles, treats, blankets, towels and water bowls, a log burner indoors and a beer garden outside where dogs are welcome too.
Three of the inn's rooms take dogs, every one with a character of its own, all on the first floor. Dogs should not be left alone in the bedrooms, the inn asks. Spare dog towels live in the bar for drying off after field walkies, and well behaved dogs are what the inn asks for.
Both the Cosy Bar and the Snug suit a dog, and they are where classic pub food is served, produce from local suppliers cooked simply: macaroni cheese, double cheeseburgers, steak pie. The inn does not say whether a dog can sit with you at a meal, so check when you book. The gantry carries gins, malts and other interesting spirits, the fridge rotates craft beer, and the coffee is ground from Glen Lyon beans.
Original stone walls have been brought up to date inside. The beer garden is a suntrap of classic picnic benches, bright, private and quiet, with room for friends, family and dogs in it. Perthshire countryside is what the inn is a base for.
