Penhow, Newport
A four bedroom farmhouse for eight at Penhow with an enclosed paddock and goalposts, a private hot tub, two wood burners and two well behaved dogs welcome.
Eight people, four bedrooms, two wood burners and a paddock with the goalposts already up. Castle Farmhouse is a dog friendly farmhouse in an elevated spot at Penhow, with far reaching views across the surrounding farmland and an enclosed paddock for the whole party. Two well behaved dogs are welcome, and muddy boots stay in the entrance porch.
The paddock is enclosed and made for football, and two dogs will have claimed it within the hour. Around the house there are enclosed gardens, a patio with table and chairs, a sunken trampoline and a climbing platform, and an outdoor kennel for the dogs if it is wanted. A raised private deck holds the hot tub, and the detached lodge has a pool table, table football and leather seating for a tournament.
Indoors, each wood burner comes with its own basket of logs. The lounge has large picture windows over the views and colourful seating to sink into, and across the hallway, at the hub of the house, a contemporary kitchen diner pairs the second burner with a breakfast bar for keeping the cook company. Upstairs are four bedrooms, among them a king size four poster with its own en suite shower. By nightfall the dogs are stretched out in front of whichever burner was lit first.
Penhow is best known for its castle, which claims to be the oldest inhabited castle in Wales. Waymarked footpaths start from the doorstep, so the dogs are out walking within minutes, and the Offa's Dyke Path can be picked up from Chepstow. The Caerleon Roman Fortress is 7 miles away, hill walking in the Brecon Beacons National Park lies 15 miles off, and a horse can even come along to the professional yard.

Is Castle Farmhouse dog friendly?
Yes, Castle Farmhouse welcomes up to two dogs. The real draw for dog owners is the enclosed paddock that comes with the booking — it's big enough for a kickabout with the goalposts already in place, and most dogs claim it as their own within an hour of arriving.
Are dogs allowed at Castle Farmhouse year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the owner when you book to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that with two wood burners and an enclosed paddock, it's a setup that works just as well in winter as in summer.
What should I know before visiting Castle Farmhouse with my dog?
The house takes a maximum of two dogs, so it's not the right fit if you're bringing a larger pack. There's a clear house rule about muddy boots and anything that came off the fields staying in the porch — sensible given the farmhouse setting. On the plus side, waymarked footpaths leave from the farm gate, so you and your dogs can be out on a walk before you've even thought about a route.
