Tyntesfield Tynings and Sidelands Circular
Somerset
Tyntesfield is a Victorian Gothic Revival mansion near Wraxall, built in 1863 for William Gibbs, who made his fortune importing guano fertiliser, and saved for the National Trust in 2002 after a public campaign raised over eight million pounds in a hundred days, with dogs kept on a lead throughout since cattle graze the wider parkland. This walk combines two of the estate's short waymarked trails, Tynings and Sidelands, for a 3.2km loop from the car park. The route drops into Truckle Wood, ancient woodland carpeted with bluebells in spring, follows the edge of the Tynings hay field, full of oxeye daisies in early summer, and climbs back past a conifer plantation planted in the 1930s. The paths are uneven in places, with a downhill section and a stretch of concrete track, and around 50 metres of climbing in total.
This is a dog friendly walk, though it is a lead walk rather than a free run. Dogs are welcome on short leads across the estate, except in the Kitchen Garden and the house, and the wider parkland is grazed by cattle, so this route sticks to woodland and field-edge paths where dogs stay on leads throughout. There is no water on this stretch, so bring some for your dog, particularly crossing the exposed hay field. Trainers or walking boots are worth wearing, since the paths can be muddy after rain. The visitor centre near the car park has a cafe and toilets, though dogs cannot go inside the house.

Is Tyntesfield Tynings and Sidelands Circular dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome on this walk, which earns a 7/10 for dog friendliness. The route loops through Truckle Wood and along field-edge paths across the Tyntesfield estate, though it is a lead walk throughout — dogs are not permitted inside the house or in the Kitchen Garden.
Can dogs be off lead at Tyntesfield Tynings and Sidelands Circular?
No, dogs must be kept on a short lead for the entire route. The wider parkland is grazed by cattle, which is the main reason for the lead rule, and this applies across the estate rather than just in specific sections.
What should I know before visiting Tyntesfield Tynings and Sidelands Circular with my dog?
Bring water for your dog, as there is no water available on this stretch and part of the route crosses an exposed hay field. The paths can be uneven and muddy after rain, so boots or sturdy trainers are a good idea, and there is around 50 metres of climbing over the 3.2km loop. You will find a cafe and toilets at the visitor centre near the car park, though dogs cannot go inside.
