Crofthead Steading
Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway
A five star steading for eight above the Moffat Water valley with a fully enclosed rear garden, four bathrooms and a ground floor bedroom, three dogs welcome.
The rear garden is fully enclosed, which counts when three dogs are on the booking, and it sits inside a recognised International Dark Sky area, which counts at about eleven at night. Crofthead Steading is a five star dog friendly farmhouse for eight above the Moffat Water valley, with four bedrooms and a bathroom apiece.
The conversion has been done with some care. Four bathrooms for eight people means nobody waits, and one bedroom and bathroom sit on the ground floor with the access widened, which makes the house genuinely usable for somebody with limited mobility and for a dog that has given up on stairs. A wood burner heats the living space, and there are games and play things for the children in the party.
Then the evening arrives. The gas BBQ goes on out in the enclosed seating area, the valley empties of noise, and once the light has gone the sky over this part of Dumfriesshire does something that people who live under streetlights forget is possible. Three dogs lie on the warm ground and remain entirely unmoved by any of it. Moffat has been protecting its darkness on purpose for years and it shows.
The Grey Mare's Tail is 7.2 miles up the valley, a waterfall dropping 60m out of Loch Skeen with a steep path climbing alongside it, and it is the outing everybody staying here ends up doing. The Southern Upland Way crosses the ground nearby for a longer day. St Mary's Loch lies over the hill, and three dogs will barely dent Annandale in a week.

Is Crofthead Steading dog friendly?
Yes, Crofthead Steading is a five star dog-friendly farmhouse that welcomes up to three dogs. The rear garden is fully enclosed, so your dogs can roam freely outside without the need for a lead, and the surrounding Moffat Water valley offers serious walking country to keep even the most energetic dogs happy.
Are dogs allowed at Crofthead Steading year round?
The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your preferred dates. What we can say is that the location lends itself to visits in any season — a wood burner inside and an enclosed garden outside make it a comfortable base year round.
What should I know before visiting Crofthead Steading with my dog?
The property accepts up to three dogs, and the fully enclosed rear garden means you won't need to worry about them bolting the moment you step outside. One bedroom and bathroom sit on the ground floor with widened access, which is worth knowing if your dog has given up on stairs. Just up the valley, the Grey Mare's Tail — a 60m waterfall with a steep path alongside it — is the walk most guests end up doing, so make sure your dog is comfortable on hillier terrain.
