The Old Mill - Fritchley

Fritchley, Derbyshire

A three bedroom mill conversion for six at Fritchley near Belper, with an enclosed patio and lawn on two levels, an orchard and stream beyond, two dogs welcome.

Book now

The steps from the patio down to the lawn are shallow ones, a small thing that changes a good deal. The Old Mill sleeps six at Fritchley, dog friendly, with three bedrooms above. The patio garden is enclosed and so is the lawn below it, and two dogs come along. A dog that has begun to think about steps will use both levels here instead of settling for whichever one it can reach.

Past the enclosure the grounds open out to half an acre of mature garden with an orchard in it and a stream running through, and the owners are straightforward about the wildlife pond out there: it is worth watching with a dog about, and hearing that on the first morning beats working it out on the third. Inside there is a wood burner in one room and an open fire in another, a utility for the muddy end of a week, and a piano nobody will admit to playing.

It suits six people who wanted a village and not a view. Fritchley is a few streets laid along a hillside, and the lanes out of it go up rather than sideways, which sorts the walking out without anybody having to plan it. Two dogs get an enclosed lawn to come back to and half an acre to be taken round first.

4 miles down the valley, Belper is one of the places the factory was invented. The North Mill still stands by the water, put up in 1804 with an iron frame inside it so that it could not burn, and every framed building since is descended from it. Two dogs get a riverside path and a town that was never prettified for anybody.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Old Mill - Fritchley dog friendly?

Yes, The Old Mill welcomes up to two dogs. There's an enclosed patio garden and an enclosed lawn on two levels, so your dogs have a safe space to roam freely, plus half an acre of mature garden with an orchard and a stream to explore beyond the enclosure.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Old Mill - Fritchley year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the owners when booking to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting The Old Mill - Fritchley with my dog?

The main thing worth knowing ahead of arrival is that there's a wildlife pond in the open grounds beyond the enclosed garden — the owners flag this themselves, and it's the kind of thing that's useful to hear before your first morning rather than discover mid-week. The enclosed lawn is on two levels connected by shallow steps, which works well for dogs that find steps a consideration, and there's a utility room for muddy returns from the lanes around Fritchley.
