The Old St Johns Church is a magnificent former Methodist chapel dating back to 1883, in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds village of Burton Fleming. Beautifully converted to sleep ten, with a hot tub, a balcony and an enclosed private yard, it is a dog friendly holiday retreat for families and friends, and two dogs are welcome.
From the outside it is a striking building of red and yellow brick in Romanesque style. Coats and walking shoes stay in the cloakroom off the vestibule, and then the grandeur of the place opens up: high vaulted ceilings, decorative timber joists and a spectacular stained glass rose window throwing colour across the room. The kitchen has two breakfast bars, there is air hockey for the competitive, and in the lounge electric reclining sofas face the wood burner, where the dogs stretch out after a long day walking.
Upstairs, a light, open entertainment space opens onto a balcony for morning coffee and the views. Five beautiful bedrooms each have an en suite, two on the ground floor and three upstairs, with a super king in the ground floor master. Courtyard doors lead out to the rear patio, dressed with wooden benches and a table, where the group catches up before stepping into the hot tub, both dogs settled close by.
Burton Fleming is a peaceful village with a post office and a children's play area, and walks, public footpaths and cycle trails start almost from the front door, so the dogs see plenty of the Wolds. Burton Agnes Hall, Sledmere House and the Wolds Way Lavender and Herb Farm are all worth a few hours, and the sandy beaches of Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough are close.
