All four bedrooms here are zip-and-link, which means the house can be made up as doubles or as eight singles or anything between, and it is settled at booking rather than on arrival. Valley View sleeps eight at Alsop-en-le-Dale and is dog friendly, with lawn, patio and a fire pit inside the enclosure. Two dogs come as well. A house that reconfigures is useful when the party is two families who have never shared a kitchen.

Three bathrooms is generous at this size, one of them downstairs alongside a ground floor bedroom. The lounge has a burner in it, the games room a table that does several sports badly and one well, and there is a hot tub outside. Two dogs is a modest allowance at this size and shapes who the house suits, but the garden is walled to the lawn and neither has to be watched.

It suits eight people who came for the limestone rather than for a town. Alsop-en-le-Dale is a handful of buildings and a Norman church down a lane off the main road, and the country around is walled white fields with clefts cut into it that you do not see until the edge. Two dogs get a lot of quiet between here and the next village.

Hartington, 5 miles north, has a duck pond in the middle and a cheese shop that outlasted most of the reasons people used to come. Below it Beresford Dale runs narrow and wooded, with the little fishing temple Charles Cotton built for Izaak Walton standing on the bank where the two of them fished. Two dogs get Wolfscote Dale beyond it, which is open, level and almost always empty.
