Dovedale Stepping Stones Extended Loop

This 8 km extended loop takes the classic Dovedale walk beyond the busy riverside stretch, climbing away from the valley floor onto the limestone plateau above before descending back to the river further upstream. The 371 m of climbing gives the walk real substance, with the upper sections crossing open farmland and quiet tracks where the crowds thin dramatically and the views across the White Peak open up. The return follows the river through the quieter upper dale, where the limestone scenery continues without the congestion of the stepping stones section below. The combination of valley and hilltop gives the walk two distinct characters in a single circuit.

This is a dog friendly walk that delivers the best of Dovedale while avoiding the worst of the crowds. The riverside sections carry the rich chalk-stream scent of the Dove, and the river provides water access for drinking and paddling at calmer points. The upper sections give dogs proper exercise with the sustained climbing, and the open farmland provides different ground and scent to work. Off-lead potential is limited as livestock graze the fields above the valley, so leads should be carried throughout. The rougher terrain on the climb suits dogs comfortable on uneven, natural ground.
