Dovedale Stepping Stones and Thorpe Cloud
Derbyshire
Dovedale is one of the most visited valleys in the Peak District, and this 5.5 km circular from the main car park follows the River Dove north to the famous limestone stepping stones before crossing to the western bank, climbing over Thorpe Cloud at 287 metres with its views across the White Peak, and descending back along the river. The valley is a National Nature Reserve, with towering limestone pinnacles, ash woodland and the clear, cold river creating a landscape of genuine beauty. The stepping stones have drawn visitors since the Victorian era and remain the centrepiece of the walk.
This is a dog friendly walk rich in sensory interest despite the lead requirement. Dogs must stay on leads throughout due to the NNR designation and extensive grazing livestock, but the river air along the valley floor carries a complex mix of watercress, chalk stone and cool water that dogs find deeply absorbing. The stepping stones can be awkward for dogs, and many wade through the shallows alongside instead, which most seem to prefer. The climb over Thorpe Cloud is short but steep and provides a genuine workout. Arrive early on summer weekends as the car park fills by mid-morning and the stepping stones become very crowded. Best enjoyed on quieter weekdays when the valley's natural atmosphere can be properly appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dovedale is a welcome destination for dogs, earning a 7/10 dog friendly rating. The 5.5 km circular walk offers a rich sensory experience for dogs, with the clear River Dove, limestone valley air and ash woodland providing plenty of interest throughout. Just bear in mind that leads are required for the whole route.
Unfortunately not , dogs must be kept on leads throughout the entire walk. Dovedale is a designated National Nature Reserve and there is extensive grazing livestock in the area, so the lead requirement applies across the whole route. That said, the valley still offers dogs a genuinely engaging walk, and many enjoy wading through the shallows alongside the stepping stones rather than tackling the stones themselves.
The climb over Thorpe Cloud is short but steep, so it's worth knowing your dog is comfortable with that kind of terrain. The stepping stones can be awkward for dogs to navigate, but wading through the shallows alongside is a popular and perfectly sensible alternative. If you're visiting on a sunny weekend, aim to arrive early , the car park at DE6 2AY fills by mid-morning and the stepping stones get very busy, so a quieter weekday visit will let you and your dog make the most of the valley's natural atmosphere.
