Bude Canal and Coast Circular

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A flat, stile-free canal and coast loop that suits any dog, including puppies and older ones, with two beaches for you both to finish on.

The Bude Canal was built to carry lime-rich sea sand inland, a trade so large that even a reported 4,000 horses a day could not keep up with it, and it ran for 35 miles towards the Tamar valley. This 6.3km figure-of-eight walk, flat and stile-free enough to suit an older dog or a puppy, starts beside the canal in the centre of Bude and follows the towpath inland past Bude Marshes, where herons and egrets feed along the canal and the River Neet, before looping back to the sea lock at the canal's mouth. The second loop heads out past Bude Castle and the Victorian tidal Sea Pool onto the low cliffs above Summerleaze and Crooklets beaches, then returns through the town. Every path is surfaced and the route is almost flat, with only around 40 metres of climbing, and it can be split into two shorter loops of about two miles each.

This is a dog friendly walk that suits almost any dog, including older ones and puppies. There are no stiles and no livestock, and a dog with good recall can have some freedom on the wider stretches of towpath, though swans, ducks and geese live on the canal and cyclists share the path, so be ready with the lead. Summerleaze beach allows dogs all year, while Crooklets has seasonal dog restrictions. The low cliffs are unfenced in places. Bude has plenty of cafes and pubs.
