Castle Coole Beech Walk
County Fermanagh
Castle Coole is a neo-classical mansion completed in 1798 for the Earls of Belmore, set in landscaped parkland on the edge of Enniskillen and cared for by the National Trust. The Beech Trail starts from the car park near the reception and tea room and follows a surfaced woodland path, easy on a dog kept on the lead, through beech woodland planted around 1709, passing an unusual brick ice house dating from 1794 built in the shape of an inverted cone. An optional extension adds another loop through the wider parkland, taking in views out towards Topped Mountain, and native bluebells cover parts of the woodland floor in May. The going is flat and easy throughout on a well-made path, with the shorter loop taking around half an hour.
This dog friendly walk is short and level, suiting an easy visit rather than a long day out, though the National Trust asks for dogs to be kept on a lead across the parkland and garden areas, so off-lead time here is limited. There is a small lake within the grounds, though direct access to the water is not the focus of the route, and the mature beech canopy gives good shade through the woodland sections. Livestock is not a feature of the parkland walk itself. Castle Coole has a tea room and toilets near the car park, and Enniskillen, a short drive away, has a wider choice of dog-friendly cafes and pubs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Castle Coole Beech Walk dog friendly?
Castle Coole is a welcoming spot for dogs, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog-friendly rating. The Beech Trail follows a well-surfaced, flat woodland path that's easy going for dogs of all sizes and ages, winding through beech woodland that dates back to around 1709. Just bear in mind that the National Trust asks for dogs to be kept on leads throughout the parkland and garden areas.
Can dogs be off lead at Castle Coole Beech Walk?
Unfortunately, off-lead time here is limited — the National Trust requires dogs to be kept on leads across the parkland and garden areas for the whole route. What should I know before visiting Castle Coole Beech Walk with my dog?
The walk is short and level, with the main loop taking around half an hour, so it suits a relaxed outing rather than a long day's hiking. Dogs must be kept on leads throughout, and while there is a small lake within the grounds, water access isn't really a feature of the route. There's a tea room and toilets near the car park, and Enniskillen is just a short drive away if you're looking for dog-friendly cafes or pubs afterwards.
