Esholt Woods Circular Walk

West Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A short loop through the ancient woodland of Esholt Woods and the village of Esholt, Emmerdale's original filming location, with a dog-friendly pub at the finish.

Esholt Woods is a stretch of ancient semi-natural woodland along Guiseley Beck and Yeadon Gill where dogs should stay close on tracks shared with cyclists and horse riders, on the edge of the village of Esholt between Shipley and Guiseley. Four separate woods, Springwood, Belmont, Jerrison and Sodhall Hill, combine into one block of mixed beech, oak, birch, pine and sycamore, with wet woodland, meadows and ponds adding variety. This 3.4km circular walk climbs gently through the trees to elevated views over Bradford and Leeds before dropping back down past the beck. Esholt itself has a long history: the 12th century Esholt Priory once stood here, replaced by Esholt Hall in 1709, and the village later became famous as the real-life filming location for the original Emmerdale Farm.

This is a dog friendly walk with moderate off-lead potential on the quieter woodland paths, though the tracks are shared with cyclists and horse riders in places, so it pays to keep a dog close on blind corners. There is no significant livestock on the route, and Guiseley Beck runs through the woods for a paddle on a warm day, with plenty of shade from the mature tree canopy. The bluebells in spring are a particular highlight for a dog walk here. Parking is on-street around High View, and the walk finishes back in Esholt village, where the Woolpack Inn is a dog friendly stop for food and drink.
