Leeds and Liverpool Canal: Saltaire to Bingley Five Rise Locks

West Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A level towpath walk on a lead for dogs, from Saltaire's World Heritage mill village to the famous staircase locks at Bingley.

Saltaire is the model mill village that Sir Titus Salt built beside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal from 1851, where dogs need a lead on the busy towpath and near the steep locks at Bingley, housing his workers in stone terraces and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 4.8km towpath walk starts by Salts Mill and heads west along the canal past Hirst Lock and the edge of Hirst Wood to Dowley Gap, where an aqueduct carries the canal about 30 feet above the River Aire and the towpath swaps sides. It continues into Bingley, past the Three Rise, to finish at Bingley Five Rise Locks, the steepest flight of locks in Britain, which lifts boats about 18 metres in five linked chambers over less than 100 metres. It is stile-free and near level, on gravel, stone flags and cobbles, with a short climb beside the locks. Return by train or bus from Bingley to Saltaire, or walk back for a round trip of about 10km.

This dog friendly walk is easy on any dog, with no stiles and no livestock, but the towpath is shared with cyclists and runners and is busy at weekends, so a lead is the sensible choice for most of the way. Keep dogs out of the canal, where steep, stone edges make it hard for a dog to climb out, and take extra care around the deep lock chambers at Bingley. Hirst Wood gives a shaded break. There are cafes and pubs at both ends, including the Five Rise Lock Café.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Leeds and Liverpool Canal: Saltaire to Bingley Five Rise Locks?
