Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard

Bedfordshire

The resurfaced Grand Union Canal towpath north of Leighton Buzzard is now one of the flattest and most all-weather walks in the south of the county. The 9.6 km circuit heads north from Leighton Lock through Linslade and into open countryside, then cuts across to Rushmere Country Park — mature trees, woodland trails, and a sequence of ponds — before following the River Ouzel valley back into town. Wide towpath, no livestock, water access throughout.

Dogs get a rich sensory experience along the canal — slow water, marginal vegetation, and the accumulated scent trail of every towpath user who's passed through — without any of the navigational complexity of open countryside. The Ouzel section has sandy margins suitable for entering the water. Shared with cyclists, so leads are sensible through the busier town sections; the northern reaches are much quieter. The 2022 resurfacing makes this genuinely passable year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard dog friendly?

Yes, this is a genuinely excellent choice for a dog walk. The 9.6 km circuit combines a flat canal towpath, open countryside, the woodland trails and ponds of Rushmere Country Park, and a stretch along the River Ouzel , all with no livestock to worry about and water access throughout.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard?

The northern reaches of the towpath are quiet enough for most dogs to enjoy some off-lead time, but leads are sensible through the busier town sections where the path is shared with cyclists. The River Ouzel stretch has sandy margins where dogs can get into the water, which makes it a particularly good spot to let them roam a little.

  • What should I know before visiting Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard with my dog?

The towpath was resurfaced in 2022, making it genuinely passable year-round in most weather , a real bonus in a county where many walks get muddy in winter. You can park in Leighton Buzzard town centre or roadside near the canal on Leighton Road (LU7 1HR), and there are cafés and pubs in town as well as the Grove Lock pub nearby if you fancy a post-walk stop.
