Harlestone Firs Woodland Walk
Northamptonshire
Harlestone Firs is around 300 acres of mixed pine and broadleaf woodland on sandy soils northwest of Northampton, and one of the best places near the town to let a dog run. Planted on part of the historic Harlestone estate, it is criss-crossed by a dense network of sandy paths, tracks and bridleways. There is no single waymarked route, so this roughly 4.8km loop links the main rides through the heart of the wood, though shorter one to two mile loops and longer variations up to five miles are easily made from the same car park. The going is sandy and well drained in summer but muddy and rutted with exposed tree roots after rain, with gentle undulations throughout but no serious climbing.
This is a dog friendly wood with a lot of off-lead potential on the quieter rides away from the main entrance, though the busier paths are shared with mountain bikers and horse riders, especially at weekends, so dogs without a solid recall are safer on the lead there. There is no livestock and no water source in the wood, so bring enough for a thirsty dog, and there is only one dog waste bin, by the main entrance. The garden centre opposite the car park has a dog friendly cafe with water bowls and treats, plus a pet shop, making it an easy stop before or after the walk. Parking in the free layby opposite the garden centre fills up on busy weekends.

Can dogs be off lead at Harlestone Firs Woodland Walk?
