Hockley Woods Ancient Woodland Walk
Essex
Hockley Woods is the largest remaining piece of the wildwood that covered much of Essex after the last ice age 10,000 years ago, a 91 hectare site of special scientific interest made up of seven named woods, including Great Bull Wood and Great Hawkwell Wood, and with no dog ban or lead only rule in place, a dog can enjoy the wide network of paths largely off lead under control. Owned and managed by Rochford District Council as a Local Nature Reserve, the woods grow oak, sweet chestnut, birch and hornbeam on varied soils, and support three species of orchid and the protected heath fritillary butterfly, a rarity in Essex. This circuit of around 5km follows the woods' network of paths, popular enough to host a free weekly 5km parkrun on Saturday mornings, on mostly flat, well used tracks that can be muddy after rain.
This is a dog friendly walk with unrestricted access across the woods, and no dog ban or lead only rule is in place, so dogs can enjoy the wide network of paths and rich woodland scent largely off lead under control. There is no livestock in the woods. Watch for other users, particularly on Saturday mornings when the parkrun is under way, and keep dogs clear of the protected orchids and any butterfly conservation areas that are fenced off. There is a car park, bus stop and public toilets at the main entrance, though no cafe on site.
