Jesmond Dene

Tyne and Wear

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10The Ouseburn gives dogs a paddle in the middle of Newcastle on this wooded gorge walk, past a Victorian waterfall and old mill buildings for their humans.

Jesmond Dene is a steep, wooded river valley running through the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, landscaped by the Victorian industrialist William Armstrong, who built waterfalls, a grotto and planted exotic trees around his home at Jesmond Dene House before gifting the estate to the city in 1883. There is genuine off-lead potential on the quieter woodland paths away from the busy riverside route, and the Ouseburn gives a dog a paddle on a warm day, though a lead is needed near the animal enclosures at Pets Corner. A network of paths connects the dene to Armstrong and Heaton Parks, with a popular circuit of around 5.6km taking in the waterfall, old mill buildings and the wooded gorge. The paths nearer the river are flatter, but many side paths are steep and slippery after rain, so this is a proper walk rather than a level stroll.

This is a dog friendly park with genuine off-lead potential on the quieter woodland paths away from the main riverside route, which gets busy with families, especially near Pets Corner. Pets Corner itself is a small free attraction with goats, alpacas and other animals in enclosures, so keep dogs on a lead as you pass. The Ouseburn offers a paddle for a dog on a warm day, though it can run fast after heavy rain, and the dene's steep sides and drops near the waterfall are worth a lead in places. The Visitor Centre has a cafe, gift shop and toilets, with several free entrances and parking areas around the dene.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Jesmond Dene dog friendly?

Jesmond Dene is a well-loved spot for dogs and earns a solid 8/10 on our dog-friendly rating. The wooded valley has plenty of space to explore, the Ouseburn offers a paddle on warmer days, and there are free entrances and parking areas dotted around the dene. The main riverside path can get busy with families, particularly near Pets Corner, but quieter woodland paths make it easy to find a bit of breathing room.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Jesmond Dene?

There is genuine off-lead potential on the quieter woodland paths away from the main riverside route. Dogs should be kept on a lead when passing Pets Corner, which has goats, alpacas and other animals in enclosures, and care is worth taking near the waterfall and steep drops. The Ouseburn can also run fast after heavy rain, so it's worth keeping an eye on conditions before letting your dog wade in.

  • What should I know before visiting Jesmond Dene with my dog?
