King's Cave Circuit, Blackwaterfoot
North Ayrshire
The King's Cave is one of a line of sea caves in the sandstone cliffs north of Blackwaterfoot on Arran's west coast, set above a raised shingle beach. Dogs can enjoy the forest paths off lead, though the rocky gully descent and boulder-strewn foreshore need care and a firm lead. Legend says Robert the Bruce sheltered here and watched the famous spider, though Forestry and Land Scotland admits that is unlikely; the carvings inside, both Christian and older, are real enough, and a torch helps to see them. This 4.5km circuit from the FLS car park runs through mixed forest, with views across Kilbrannan Sound to Kintyre, then drops down a rocky cleft to the shore. It follows the rocky foreshore past the caves, climbs back up at a signpost where the Arran Coastal Way continues south, and returns through the trees with views of Machrie Moor and the Drumadoon cliffs. There is about 140 metres of climbing, on good forest paths and a rougher, rockier section by the sea.
This dog friendly walk mixes shady forest with a stretch of wild shore, and livestock is unlikely on either. There is moderate off-lead potential in the trees and along the beach for a dog with reliable recall, and the sea gives a chance to paddle. The descent through the rocky gully and the boulder-strewn foreshore need care with older dogs. FLS reports ongoing forestry operations in the area, so follow any signs and keep dogs close near working machinery. Parking is free, and the nearest toilets are in Blackwaterfoot.

Is King's Cave Circuit, Blackwaterfoot dog friendly?
King's Cave Circuit is a great choice for dogs, earning a solid 8 out of 10 on our dog-friendly rating. The 4.5km loop combines shady forest paths with a stretch of wild, rocky shore, and livestock is unlikely on either section. Dogs can also paddle in the sea along the foreshore, which is a nice bonus on a warm day.
Can dogs be off lead at King's Cave Circuit, Blackwaterfoot?
There's good off-lead potential in the forest and along the beach for dogs with reliable recall, and neither section typically has livestock to worry about. That said, you'll want to put the lead back on for the rocky gully descent and the boulder-strewn foreshore, where the terrain needs careful navigation — particularly with older or less agile dogs. Forestry and Land Scotland also reports ongoing forestry operations in the area, so keep dogs close if you encounter any working machinery.
What should I know before visiting King's Cave Circuit, Blackwaterfoot with my dog?
The route includes about 140 metres of climbing, mixing good forest paths with a rougher, rockier section by the sea, so it's worth considering your dog's fitness and agility before you go — older dogs may find the boulder-strewn foreshore and rocky gully descent a bit of a challenge. Parking is free at the FLS King's Cave car park on the A841, just under 3 miles north of Blackwaterfoot, but there are no facilities at the car park itself; the nearest toilets and places to eat are back in Blackwaterfoot. A torch is handy if you want to see the ancient carvings inside the cave.
