Ness Country Park Waterfall Walk
County Londonderry
Ness Country Park is a 55 acre reserve near Claudy in County Londonderry where dogs can follow the Burntollet River through a wooded gorge all the way to Ness Waterfall, taking in Ness Wood and the adjoining Ervey Wood Nature Reserve. The out-and-back route runs from the visitor centre car park past a series of created ponds and over Hone's Bridge, then follows the Burntollet River upstream through a steep, wooded gorge to Ness Waterfall, a 30 foot drop that is one of the highest in Northern Ireland, before continuing past Shanes Bridge into further woodland. The path covers around 3.7km there and back with roughly 90 metres of climbing, and the ground is uneven in places with gorges, rock outcrops and rapids along the river, making it a moderately challenging walk rather than a flat stroll.
This is a dog friendly walk with real off-lead potential through the wider woodland, away from the visitor centre and car parks where dogs should be kept under close control. The Burntollet River runs alongside for most of the route, giving a dog plenty of chances to drink or paddle in the shallower stretches, and the tree canopy keeps things cool even in summer. There is no livestock in the reserve. Watch dogs closely near the gorge edges and rocks around the waterfall itself, where the ground can be slippery. The park connects into the adjoining Faughan Valley Woodlands, so there is scope to extend the walk, and Claudy has cafes and pubs a short drive away.

All dog friendly stays in County LondonderryFrequently Asked Questions
Is Ness Country Park Waterfall Walk dog friendly?
Ness Country Park scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, and it's a genuinely rewarding place to bring a dog. The reserve has no livestock, the Burntollet River runs alongside most of the route offering plenty of chances to drink and paddle, and the tree canopy keeps things cool in summer — all of which adds up to a comfortable day out for most dogs.
Can dogs be off lead at Ness Country Park Waterfall Walk?
There's real off-lead potential through the wider woodland sections of the walk, away from the visitor centre and car parks where dogs should be kept under closer control. That said, the route passes through a steep gorge with rock outcrops and slippery ground near the waterfall, so it's worth keeping a close eye on your dog in those areas rather than giving them free rein everywhere.
What should I know before visiting Ness Country Park Waterfall Walk with my dog?
The walk covers around 3.7km there and back with roughly 90 metres of climbing, and the ground is uneven in places — it's a moderately challenging outing rather than a flat stroll, so bear that in mind if your dog is older or less sure-footed. The gorge edges and rocks around Ness Waterfall can be slippery, so keep dogs close in those spots. Parking is at the visitor centre car park, and if you need a post-walk coffee or lunch, Claudy has cafes and pubs a short drive away.
