Oxford Island National Nature Reserve Circuit
County Armagh
Oxford Island is a lead-only nature reserve on a peninsula reaching into Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles, but a rewarding one for a calm dog thanks to flat, traffic-free paths through woodland and along the shore. It is run as a National Nature Reserve around the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre, with a network of paths totalling around 6.4km linking Kinnego Marina to the Discovery Centre, about 70% of it on gravel tracks through woodland and open parkland, and several birdwatching hides looking out over the water. The terrain is flat and easy for most of the route, though there are some steep steps near one of the viewing points, and the full loop takes under two hours at a gentle pace. The lough shore and reedbeds support a wide variety of birdlife, making this one of the best birdwatching walks in the area.
This is a dog friendly walk on good, mostly level paths, though dogs should be kept on a lead throughout to protect ground-nesting birds and the reserve's other wildlife, including rabbits, badgers and otters. There is no livestock to worry about, and the lough gives a dog plenty to look at even without a swim. Woodland sections offer shade, and the whole route is well signed between the Discovery Centre and the marina. Oxford Island has a cafe, shop, toilets and a play park at the Discovery Centre, plus further toilets and refreshments at Kinnego Marina, with free parking at both.

The score reflects the on-lead requirement throughout, which protects the reserve's ground-nesting birds and other wildlife.
Can dogs be off lead at Oxford Island National Nature Reserve Circuit?
