Rannoch Moor Edge Walk from Bridge of Orchy

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10The walk from Bridge of Orchy onto the Rannoch Moor edge above Loch Tulla delivers vast, unfenced Highland space and exceptional off-lead freedom on Britain's greatest wilderness plateau.

Rannoch Moor covers 150 square kilometres of blanket bog, lochan-dotted moorland and peat hag at an average elevation of 300 metres, bounded by mountains on all sides. The walk from Bridge of Orchy via the West Highland Way up to Mam Carraigh and across the moor edge gives access to this extraordinary landscape without requiring the full commitment of a moor crossing. The route climbs above Loch Tulla with increasingly expansive views across the moor to the Black Mount, takes in the exposed ridge of Beinn Inverveigh and returns via the old military road through the upper glen.

For dog owners seeking space on a genuinely grand scale, Rannoch Moor provides it without compromise. Off-lead potential is exceptional across the open moor sections, with no fencing, almost no livestock above the valley floor and a horizon that stretches in all directions. The burns and lochans on the moor provide drinking and swimming water throughout. The peat hags can be deep and wet underfoot, so appropriate footwear is advisable. The Bridge of Orchy Hotel has a dog-friendly bar and provides a welcome endpoint. The West Highland Way passes through Bridge of Orchy, and the surroundings have the particular atmosphere of a major long-distance walking route.
