RSPB Ouse Washes Reserve Walk
Cambridgeshire
The Ouse Washes are a linear washland of the Fens, a strip up to a kilometre wide and 32km long held between the Old Bedford River and the New Bedford River to take floodwater from the Great Ouse in winter, and the RSPB asks for a dog to stay under close control here because of grazing cattle. The reserve near Manea sits on the western bank, and this out and back walk of around 5.6km follows the flat path from the visitor centre north along the bank top, passing bird hides looking over the washes, the furthest nearly 3km away. In winter the washes flood, holding huge numbers of wildfowl and Bewick's and whooper swans, while summer brings breeding waders to the wet grassland. The going is flat throughout, though the bank top can be muddy when wet.
This is a dog friendly walk, though the reserve asks for dogs to be kept under close control at all times because of grazing cattle on the washes, and recommends calling ahead for advice before visiting with a dog. There is no formal off lead area here, so a lead is the safer choice throughout, given the ditches and open water either side of the bank. The path gives a dog a long, flat stretch of fresh air, with wide fenland skies and a good chance of seeing swans or geese overhead in winter. There is no shade on the open bank, so bring water for a dog in summer. Toilets are at the visitor centre, and the car park is free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RSPB Ouse Washes Reserve Walk dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome at RSPB Ouse Washes Reserve Walk, which earns a 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The walk offers a long, flat 5.6km out-and-back route along the bank top, with wide fenland skies and the chance to spot wintering swans and geese — a genuinely rewarding outing for a dog and owner alike.
Can dogs be off lead at RSPB Ouse Washes Reserve Walk?
There is no formal off lead area at the reserve, and keeping your dog on a lead throughout is the safer choice. Grazing cattle on the washes require dogs to be under close control, and the bank top also has open water and ditches on either side, making a lead a sensible precaution for the whole walk.
What should I know before visiting RSPB Ouse Washes Reserve Walk with my dog?
The RSPB recommends calling ahead for advice before visiting with a dog, so it's worth doing that before you set out. The bank top can get muddy in wet weather, there's no shade on the open path, so bring water for your dog in summer. Toilets are available at the visitor centre, and parking is free.
