Skipsea Castle and Sands Circular

East Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A flat Holderness coast loop from Skipsea to a huge Norman castle mound and back along the beach, dog friendly all year round.

Skipsea is a Holderness coast village between Bridlington and Hornsea where dogs are welcome on the beach all year, and its old castle mound is one of the largest and best preserved Norman mottes in the country. Built around 1086 by the Flemish lord Drogo de la Beuvriere on top of an earlier Iron Age mound, it stands 11 metres high and 100 metres across, with an 8.25 acre bailey defended by a wide ditch, now managed by English Heritage as grassy earthworks with no standing masonry left. This 8.5km circuit leaves the village for the castle, loops back through quiet lanes towards the coast, then follows Skipsea Sands south past a golf course and caravan sites towards Atwick before turning back inland. The ground is flat throughout, on lanes, field paths and firm sand.

This is a dog friendly walk, and Skipsea beach has no seasonal restrictions, so dogs can run and paddle here at any time of year, unlike several other East Yorkshire beaches that close to dogs in summer. The castle earthworks are open grassland with room for a dog to explore off lead, though the bailey is sometimes grazed, so keep a lead handy just in case. The lanes back to the coast and the stretch past the golf course and caravan site need a dog on a lead. Watch the cliff edge on the beach, where coastal erosion is ongoing and can undercut sections without warning. There are no facilities on route, but the Board Inn in the village is dog friendly for afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Skipsea Castle and Sands Circular dog friendly?

Yes, this is a genuinely dog-friendly route with a rating of 7/10. One of its standout features is that Skipsea beach has no seasonal restrictions, meaning dogs are welcome to run and paddle on the sand all year round — unlike several other East Yorkshire beaches that ban dogs in summer. After the walk, the Board Inn in the village is dog friendly too.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Skipsea Castle and Sands Circular?

There are opportunities for off-lead time, but it depends on where you are on the route. The castle earthworks are open grassland where dogs can explore freely, though the bailey is sometimes grazed by livestock, so keep a lead to hand just in case. The lanes, the stretch past the golf course, and the section by the caravan site all require dogs to be on a lead.

  • What should I know before visiting Skipsea Castle and Sands Circular with my dog?

The most important safety note is to watch your dog near the cliff edge on the beach, as coastal erosion is ongoing along this stretch of the Holderness coast and can undercut sections without warning. There are no facilities at all on the 8.5km route itself, so bring water and anything else you need from the start. Parking is limited to the village centre with no dedicated car park, so arriving early on busy days is a good idea.
