Woodhall Spa and Ostler’s Plantation Loop

The Woodhall Spa and Ostler's Plantation loop follows a 6.4 km circuit through pine woodland on sandy heathland south of the Victorian spa town. The sandy tracks wind through mature Scots and Corsican pine with an understorey of bracken and heather, creating a forest environment reminiscent of the Brecks or Thetford despite sitting in the heart of Lincolnshire. The terrain is dead flat with just 22 metres of total gain, and the sandy surface drains exceptionally well, making this a reliable walk in virtually any weather. The plantation has a peaceful, contemplative character — quiet even on weekends — and the pine corridors filter the light in ways that shift with the seasons and time of day.

This dog friendly walk offers moderate off-lead potential with low livestock risk, making the wide forest tracks ideal for dogs who enjoy ranging ahead in a safe, enclosed environment. The sandy ground holds rabbit and deer tracks that keep noses busy, and the pine resin scent is constant — warm and aromatic on sunny days, sharper and cleaner in winter. The flat, soft surface is particularly kind on older joints and sensitive paws. Woodhall Spa itself has good facilities including cafes and shops within easy reach of the plantation.
