Worden Park, Leyland

Lancashire

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10A dog wash and no livestock make Worden Park's flat, stile-free paths an easy off lead ramble through 150 acres of Victorian gardens in Leyland.

Worden Park covers around 150 acres in Leyland, laid out as the grounds of Worden Hall, a country house that dates back to at least 1230 and was largely destroyed by fire in 1941. There's no livestock and a dog wash at the main car park, so dogs can enjoy the paths off lead. The council bought the estate in 1950 and opened it to the public the following year, and the grounds still carry the Victorian and Edwardian landscaping of William Andrews Nesfield, including formal gardens, a walled kitchen garden and a yew maze. This 5km circular walk takes in the woodland in the park, the duck pond, the miniature railway and an 18th century icehouse, following waterside trails along Shaw Brook. The paths are surfaced and flat throughout, with no stiles or climbing.

This is a dog friendly park with a dog wash facility at the main car park, useful after a muddy circuit of the woods. Dogs are welcome on lead or under close control across most of the grounds, and the wooded area to the south gives a dog with reliable recall room to explore off the lead away from the busier lawns. Shaw Brook offers a shallow paddle on a warm day. Dogs are not allowed in the children's playground, and the walled kitchen garden was closed for refurbishment at the time of research, so check before planning a route through it. Worden Park has a dog friendly cafe by the craft centre, and free parking is available close to the entrance on Worden Lane.
