1 / 8Rowan Tree Country Hotel
Aviemore, Highland
Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms.
A country hotel overlooking Loch Alvie near Aviemore, where dogs book into the king or super king rooms and eat with you in the bar.
Rowan Tree Country Hotel keeps a rural spot overlooking Loch Alvie, three miles south of Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, with the Monadhliath Mountains across the water. The family who own and run it have made a dog friendly hotel of it for well behaved dogs, and the walking starts at the door: a stroll down to Loch Alvie is the short one.
Dogs are booked into the king or super king rooms, and should not be left alone in the room. Of the 11 bedrooms no two are alike, some tucked under the eaves, all with Egyptian cotton linen and goose down duvets, and the windows look over Torr Alvie or the loch. The hotel has a drying and boot room and secure storage for skis, bikes and other equipment.
Dogs don't eat in the restaurant or the breakfast room, but the bar takes them for evening meals and breakfasts, which is hardly a punishment: open fireplaces, a snug, local gins and a long row of malt whiskies. The kitchen prepares everything fresh, principally Scottish ingredients, hearty things like fish and chips beside more adventurous fine dining dishes, and breakfast runs to Rowan Tree porridge with double cream and Drambuie.
Star gazing tours and meet the bee tours are on offer, and the hotel keeps resident honey bees away from the building. In the grounds, sit quietly on the terrace and with luck a red squirrel can be spotted in the pines. Loch an Eilein Loop (Rothiemurchus), 2.3 miles off, is the nearest walk we map for a dog.
