1 / 8The Red Lion Inn, Hinxton
Hinxton, Cambridgeshire
Yes. Dogs can stay overnight.
A 16th century free house inn in the conservation village of Hinxton, with eight ground floor rooms and the bar, restaurant and garden all open to dogs.
The Red Lion has stood at the heart of Hinxton since the 16th century, a privately owned free house with a pub, a restaurant and bed and breakfast rooms in a Cambridgeshire conservation village. Dogs get the bar, the restaurant and the walled garden, which is about as clear as a dog friendly inn gets.
The eight bedrooms are set apart from the pub, 50 yards off in a mews style building with a private garden area of their own, flint and brick to match the village houses, and every one on the ground floor. Dogs stay in the rooms on request, under house rules any owner would expect. Dog numbers and leaving a dog in the room are two things the inn doesn't state, so put both questions when you enquire.
The bar, the restaurant and the walled garden under the village church clock tower are all open to dogs. The Grade II listed bar has low ceilings, an open fire and Chesterfield sofas. The menu runs from contemporary to traditional on locally sourced produce, there are four local real ales on the pumps, and an oak dry peg extension gives the dining room its space. There is no dog menu, though the inn counts itself fortunate to have a great local water supplier.
The rooms are named after local beers and cyders, each with a porcelain pump plaque on the door, and the inn holds four AA Stars. The footpaths lead off from the inn for you and the dog, past the mill and along the riverbank, and Gog Magog Hills and Wandlebury Country Park is 4.1 miles away for a longer day out.
