Trumpington Meadows Country Park Walk
Cambridgeshire
Trumpington Meadows Country Park is a 58 hectare reserve on the southern edge of Cambridge, created when the M11 corridor's farmland was restored to flower meadow, woodland and ponds and handed to the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, with dogs asked onto a lead near the meadows to protect ground nesting skylarks and lapwings. This circuit of around 4km follows wide, secure paths from Grantchester Road across the reserve to Byron's Pool, a mill pool on the River Cam where Lord Byron is said to have swum while a student at Cambridge, before looping back past ponds and hedgerows. The ground is flat and easy throughout, with riverside stretches that can be wet underfoot in winter, and the reserve's meadows are at their best with wildflowers through the summer.
This is a dog friendly walk, and dogs are welcome under effective control across the reserve, though some areas ask for a lead by the meadows and ponds, so follow the signs as you go. Keeping to the paths rather than cutting across the flower meadows protects breeding skylarks and lapwings, which nest on the ground here in spring. Byron's Pool gives a dog a shaded spot by the River Cam for a paddle, and the wider reserve has hedgerow scent and cover for brown hares and muntjac deer. Parking is available at Trumpington Park and Ride or the Byron's Pool car park, and the reserve is also reachable on foot or by bike from central Cambridge.
