1 / 8The Sun Inn
Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland and Furness
Yes. Dogs can stay in most rooms.
A 17th century inn in the heart of Kirkby Lonsdale, where dogs get a Pooch Pack on arrival and a dining area set aside for them.
Huge limestone pillars hold up the overhanging first floor of The Sun Inn, a 17th century inn at the heart of the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, named after the sun dial in St Mary's Churchyard behind it. Inside are oak beams, wooden floors and big log fires. In a town where dogs are allowed in many of the cafes and independent shops, this dog friendly inn was Highly Commended as Dog-Friendly Business of the Year in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2016.
Eight of the eleven bedrooms take dogs, Deluxe Room 4 among them, full of character with exposed stone, old oak beams and a fireplace. Dogs staying are greeted with a Pooch Pack of a towel, a dog bowl and a special treat, along with a dog trail map for a walk along the River Lune and around the town. After a muddy walk there's an outdoor doggy shower. Whether dogs may be left on their own in the room is something the inn doesn't mention, so raise it when you book.
Dogs are more than welcome in the bar, and there's a designated dining area for you and your dog. The kitchen holds two AA Rosettes, drawing on producers across Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire for meat, seafood, vegetables and dairy, and foraging Morecambe Bay for sea herbs. The restaurant even has chairs from the 1906 ocean liner, the Mauretania.
The rooms run to deep baths and super king beds, and two of them look over St Mary's Church towards the Barbon fells. On Wildpack's map, Kirkby Lonsdale: Devil's Bridge and Ruskin's View is 0.4 miles away, within easy reach with your dog, and Wildpack's closest dog friendly beach, Silverdale Cove, is 9.8 miles off.
