Ardnamurchan Point Lighthouse Walk

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10The most westerly point on mainland Britain rewards the journey with exceptional coastal wildlife, open off-lead moorland and Atlantic views south to Mull and north to Rum and Eigg.

Ardnamurchan Point is the most westerly point on the British mainland, a fact that gives the lighthouse here a special status among the 200-odd operational lighthouses around the Scottish coast. The headland sits at the tip of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a 55 km finger of land that demands a commitment to travel to reach it, first via the Corran Ferry and then along the single-track B8007. The reward is a coastal landscape of genuine remoteness. The walk from the car park circles the lighthouse headland, crosses the moorland plateau above the cliffs and follows the cliff edge with views south to Mull, north to Rum and Eigg and west into the open Atlantic.

For dog owners who make the journey, Ardnamurchan delivers. Off-lead potential is outstanding on the open headland moorland, unfenced and largely livestock-free above the lower grazing. The cliff-top path requires care near the edge. Common dolphins, harbour porpoise, minke whales and basking sharks are regularly sighted from the headland between May and September, adding a wildlife dimension that makes the walk memorable beyond its scenic quality alone. The lighthouse visitor centre is seasonal and welcomes dogs outside. The journey along the Ardnamurchan peninsula road is rewarding in itself, passing through some of the most beautiful and least-visited coastal scenery in the Western Highlands.
