Barnwell Country Park, Oundle

Northamptonshire

Barnwell sits on the edge of Oundle, one of the most appealing market towns in Northamptonshire, and its 37 acres of Nene floodplain park make an excellent short walk paired with a trip into the town's stone centre. The 4 km circuit follows willow-fringed lakes and riverbank meadows on hard stone paths and boardwalk, with the River Nene running along the eastern boundary and three waymarked trails allowing the route to be shortened or extended.

The compact size belies the quality. Dogs can reach the river at several access points along the eastern bank, and the lake edges are open enough for paddling through the summer months. The scent is dominated by water and reed, shifting in spring when flood silt settles across the meadows after the Nene drops. Kingfisher and grey heron are regular along the river. Leads are required during any active avian influenza prevention zone periods, which are signposted at the entrance.
