Beckenham Place Park Woods and Mansion Circular
London
Beckenham Place Park is Lewisham's largest green space, 96 hectares of ancient woodland, meadows and landscaped grounds where dogs can paddle in the River Ravensbourne, though the separate swimming lake and playgrounds are out of bounds. It was laid out by John Cator from 1757, who built the Palladian mansion that is now a community centre and cafe. For most of the 20th century it was a public golf course, but a 2019 regeneration closed the course, restored Cator's lake as a wild swimming lake and turned the park into a Local Nature Reserve. This loop of around 4.9km from the pay car park takes in the mansion and its gardens, climbs through the oak, wild service and sweet chestnut of the ancient woods, crosses the railway that splits the park in two and follows the River Ravensbourne through the meadows of the eastern side. It is gently undulating, with around 70 metres of climbing on park paths, woodland tracks and grass.
This is a dog friendly walk: dogs may go anywhere in the park if under control. Dogs are not allowed in the swimming lake or the playgrounds, and the park asks you to keep your dog on a lead around the lake if it might squeeze through the fence. There is water elsewhere: the Swale below the mansion and the River Ravensbourne on the eastern side are both fine for dogs to paddle. Keep to the main paths in the woods during bluebell season. Cafes are at the mansion and the Homestead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Beckenham Place Park Woods and Mansion Circular dog friendly?
Beckenham Place Park scores 8/10 for dog friendliness, and it's a genuinely great spot for a dog walk. Dogs are welcome throughout the park as long as they're under control, and there's plenty to enjoy — ancient woodland, open meadows, and the River Ravensbourne where dogs can paddle. The park even has Eddie's Dog Shop and grooming parlour on site, plus two cafes for owners.
Can dogs be off lead at Beckenham Place Park Woods and Mansion Circular?
Dogs can roam freely off lead anywhere in the park as long as they're under control. The main exceptions are the swimming lake and the playgrounds, which are off limits to dogs entirely. Around the lake, the park asks you to keep dogs on a lead if there's any chance they might squeeze through the fence.
What should I know before visiting Beckenham Place Park Woods and Mansion Circular with my dog?
The most important things to bear in mind are that the swimming lake and playgrounds are no-go areas for dogs, and that during bluebell season the park asks visitors to stick to the main paths through the woods. On the plus side, dogs can paddle in both the Swale below the mansion and the River Ravensbourne on the eastern side of the park. It's also worth knowing that the 4.9km route is gently undulating rather than strenuous, making it suitable for most dogs.
