Blackwater Estuary and Maldon Walk
Essex
Maldon's Promenade Park sits at the head of the Blackwater Estuary, with Thames sailing barges moored along the quay and a long sea wall path leading out toward the open estuary. This dog friendly circular follows the south bank of the Blackwater west to Heybridge Basin where the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation meets the tide, then loops back via the canal towpath into Maldon.
The terrain is flat throughout: hard surfaced promenade, grass and gravel sea wall and a level canal towpath. Dogs must be on lead or under close control to protect feeding, roosting and ground-nesting birds along the estuary, and they are not allowed in the fenced play areas of Promenade Park. Pay and display parking at Promenade Park has the most facilities, with a smaller car park at Heybridge Basin if starting from the canal end. Pubs at both ends make a good break.
