Crom Estate Lough Erne Walk

County Fermanagh

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A varied walk through ancient woodland with plenty to occupy a dog on the lead, passing Crom Old Castle and views over Lough Erne.

Crom Estate is a National Trust property on the shores of Upper Lough Erne near Newtownbutler, one of the largest surviving areas of ancient woodland in Ireland and home to some of the country's oldest yew trees, enough scent and shade to keep a dog busy on the lead for the whole walk. This roughly 5km circular route explores a variety of off-road paths through woodland and open parkland, taking in the ruins of Crom Old Castle, a Victorian boathouse, the White Bridge and views out over the lough with its scatter of islands. The terrain varies between climbs and descents on loose and uneven surfaces in places, giving the walk a moderate rating despite the modest overall height gain, and a walled garden and summer house add further interest along the way.

This is a dog friendly walk through varied woodland and parkland, though as with other National Trust estates in Northern Ireland, dogs should be kept on a lead throughout the site, so off-lead time is limited here. The lough shore gives plenty to look at for a dog even without direct water access on most of the route, and the mature woodland offers good shade in warmer weather. Livestock grazing is not a major feature of the main walking routes. Crom has a visitor centre with tea rooms, toilets and a children's play area, though the estate closes seasonally from November to mid March, so it is worth checking before a winter visit.
