Culbin Forest Hill 99 Trail from Wellhill
Moray
Culbin Forest is a vast pine plantation planted over a huge system of sand dunes, on the Moray Firth coast between Nairn and Findhorn. There is no livestock anywhere in the forest, and the wide, sandy rides give a dog real freedom to run. The Hill 99 trail from Wellhill car park is the classic introduction, following black waymarkers on excellent paths and tracks, with numbered junctions that make the maze of forest rides easy to navigate. It passes the Gravel-pit Ponds, dug to extract pebbles buried under the sand and now home to coots, yellow flag iris and rare mosses, then undulates over the fir-covered dunes to Hill 99, the forest's highest point, named by the foresters who planted it. A trig point is surrounded by seats, and a tall wooden tower lifts you above the canopy for a view across the salt marsh and sand banks of the Culbin reserve to the hills beyond the firth and inland to the Cairngorms. In summer a short detour visits a dragonfly pool. The loop is 6km with just 44 metres of climbing, on paths good enough for all-terrain buggies.
This is a superb dog friendly forest walk. The sandy, springy paths are kind on paws, there is no livestock anywhere in the forest, and the wide rides give plenty of room for a dog with decent recall to run. The ponds offer a drink, although Forestry and Land Scotland flag open water and ticks here. The car park has toilets and a parking charge.
