Doune Castle and the River Teith
Stirling
Doune Castle stands on a promontory where the Ardoch Burn meets the River Teith, a castle built at the end of the fourteenth century that remains in good condition and is well known to film fans from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Dogs can enjoy this easy loop, though the Teith runs fast and deep, so keep them clear of the water where the rivers meet. This 2.8km loop starts from the Castlehill car park in the centre of Doune and follows a signed public path across fields that were once part of a Roman fort, found by aerial survey in the 1980s. It passes below the castle walls, then drops down a track between the Ardoch Burn and the Teith to a bench at the meeting of the two rivers. From there a narrower, sometimes muddy path runs upstream beside the Teith before climbing to the main road, returning through the old village. There are only 24 metres of climbing, on easy paths and pavements.
This dog friendly walk is a short stroll rather than a big day out. The riverside paths give moderate off-lead potential for a dog with good recall, and the Teith and Ardoch Burn offer water, though the Teith can run fast and deep. The route passes through several pedestrian gates, and the last part is on pavements beside the main road and through the village, so a lead is needed there. The castle is a paid Historic Environment Scotland site, so check its current dog policy before planning to go inside.

Is Doune Castle and the River Teith dog friendly?
This is a pleasant and easy walk for dogs, rated 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The 2.8km loop follows signed paths, tracks and pavements through a historic part of Stirlingshire, with the River Teith and Ardoch Burn offering water along the way. Bear in mind that the castle itself is a paid Historic Environment Scotland site, so you'll want to check their current dog policy separately before planning to head inside.
Can dogs be off lead at Doune Castle and the River Teith?
There's moderate off-lead potential for dogs with reliable recall, particularly along the riverside paths beside the Teith and Ardoch Burn. That said, the Teith runs fast and deep where the two rivers meet, so it's worth keeping dogs well back from the water at that point. The final section of the route runs beside the main road and through the village, so leads are needed there.
What should I know before visiting Doune Castle and the River Teith with my dog?
The route passes through several pedestrian gates, so it's worth knowing that in advance if your dog needs a lift or squeeze-through. The riverside path upstream from the meeting of the rivers can be narrow and muddy, so boots are a good idea in wetter months. If you're hoping to visit the castle itself, check with Historic Environment Scotland ahead of time as admission is charged and dog access policies can vary.
